Advent 18 - The slaughter of the innocents - a story we dont want to tell but...

Last night I watched an outstanding and disturbing film 'Shooting Dogs' about genocide in Rwanda April-July 1994 when 800,000 people were killed because they were not the 'right kind' of Rwandan. Their lives were not of equal value. The story of a school which shelters Hutus and Tutsi people from the interahamwe - extreme militia who was to slaughter them all. It was hard to watch in parts, and reminded me again of the slaughter of the innocents bible story which is not part of any childhood nativity play. Understandably. But this year, in Conneticut, USA, this part of the story of baby Jesus has been relived in horrific circumstances. An article has been written about it by Brian Draper via Christine Sines blog
This year I have been a bit overwhelmed by the amount of British poverty, hunger and homelessness I have SEEN which perhaps has been hidden previously or has come to the surface more now because of the huge cuts in state support for the most vulnerable people by this conservative Tory government. For me seeing this film about genocide of innocents whilst being with people experiencing hunger and debt are different sides of the same coin of the violence. I cannot understand why churches the length of the UK are not doing more this Christmas to actively bring peace on earth and goodwill to all...so many middle class churches with so many savings for a rainy day, and so few working class churches with so little savings! I find I am ranting a little bit now but you get the pictures I think - that there is violence in the systems we still live within and to some extent uphold - how to actively withdraw from those systems of economic, racial and food violence - join Occupy Advent, write and send some Anmesty International Christmas Cards, find out the names of your next door neighbours when you take them a box of Christmas biscuits...baby steps.
